Maitripa College Bookkeeper (Part-time)

20-25 hours/weekly in Spring 2021; Then 15-20 hours/weekly beginning June 1

THIS IS A REMOTE POSITION UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2021 DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, AND THEN WILL TRANSLATE INTO A HYBRID REMOTE-ONSITE POSITION AT OUR OFFICE IN INNER SOUTHEAST PORTLAND; THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN FOR PORTLAND-AREA RESIDENTS.

Maitripa College is seeking an experienced, part-time Bookkeeper to assist in managing our day-to-day accounting and finance requirements. Confidentiality, excellent organizational skills, and accuracy are important qualifications for this position, as well as the ability to work well with others and to communicate clearly. The ideal candidate for this position is a skilled multi-tasker, is reliable, and is committed to consistently meeting deadlines.

The Bookkeeper maintains records of financial transactions by:

  • Establishing accounts
  • Posting transactions
  • Ensuring legal requirements compliance
  • Preparing monthly reports

The Bookkeeper is also responsible for:

  • Tracking college budgeting
  • Tracking and reporting cash flow
  • Managing funds

Specific Bookkeeper Job Duties

  • Helps to further define chart of accounts and implement college-wise bookkeeping policies and procedures (internal controls)
  • Maintains subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions
  • Balances subsidiary accounts by reconciling entries
  • Maintains general ledger by transferring subsidiary account summaries
  • Balances general ledger by preparing a trial balance; reconciling entries
  • Coordinate bank deposits and report financial results on a regular basis to management
  • Monitor office expenses and tallies and enters cash receipts
  • Prepare checks, payments and bank deposits
  • Maintains historical records by filing documents
  • Prepares financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Develop monthly financial statements, including cash flow, profit and loss statements and balance sheets
  • Prepare quarterly and monthly tax returns, along with operating and business taxes
  • Maintains internal control systems
  • Assists with budget preparation and tracking
  • Assists with audits
  • Maintains complete filing system to support financial records

Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of bookkeeping practices
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Working knowledge of relevant computer applications
  • Knowledge of data management and financial data analysis
  • An associate degree in accounting, finance or business an advantage
  • Bookkeeping certification
