Chokhor Düchen: First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma
August 1 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Chokhor Duchen (August 1, 2022)
5:30-7pm Practice (in person only) at Maitripa Jokhang
Known in English as “Wheel-Turning Day,” Chokhor Duchen commemorates the anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha’s first teaching at Deer Park in Sarnath, India. It is said that for seven weeks after his enlightenment, the Buddha did not teach. Afterward, Indra and Brahma offered a dharma wheel (dharmachakra) and a conch shell and requested Shakyamuni Buddha to teach. Accepting, Shakyamuni Buddha turned the Wheel of Dharma for the first time at Sarnath in his teaching on the four noble truths.
In celebration of Chokhor Duchen this year, we offer you an invitation to join us at Maitripa College, where the Wheel of Dharma turns continuously in an effort to bring wisdom into our modern world.
