KYABJE ZOPA RINPOCHE at Maitripa College

Sat., April 19, 7 pm

The initiation will be Vajrasattva with consort (this is a Highest Yoga Tantra initiation but not a Great Initiation) The preparation & initiation take place in one day. The event is scheduled to begin at 7, and will likely go until midnight.

Commitment: 21 long mantras or 28 short mantras every day for the rest of your life, OR the 100,000 mantra retreat within one year.

Prerequisites: Students wishing to take this initiation should be very familiar with the lam-rim. They should be prepared to take bodhisattva and tantric vows, and to do the Six Session Guru Yoga daily.

Note: Rinpoche gives Vajrasattva with consort. However students do not have to take tantric vows (generally students should take tantric vows, but Lama Yeshe chose not to make this a requirement, and Rinpoche follows Lama's example). Taking bodhisattva vows are required.

Making burning offerings to Dorje Khadro (Vajradaka) is considered to be "a golden Dharma" passed directly from Manjushri to Lama Tsongkhapa. It was one of Lama Tsongkhapa's heart practices and, as such, has a special connection with the Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

The practice of Dorje Khadro comes highly praised for its power to purify negative karma in general, but especially for its ability to purify obstacles caused by broken vows and samaya related to highest yoga tantra. It also assists us in assembling the most conducive conditions for success in long retreats.

This practice is encouraged as a powerful way to help those who are sick or dying and as a method to readily clear the mind of challenging disturbing emotions.

- From Dorje Khadro - The Preliminary Practice of Dorje Khadro: A practice text by Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Registration is required to attend, please follow the link below to register. The teaching is offered by donation only.

When you register, you will have the opportunity to pre-order the hardcopy text "The Preliminary Practice of Dorje Khadro: A practice text by Lama Zopa Rinpoche" which contains the practices as well as commentaries.

The collection provides everything one needs to be able to do the complete ngöndro of Dorje Khadro, the recitation of the principal mantra 100,000 times coupled with extensive visualization and prayers.

The book's practice section includes the Dorje Khadro practice text, Lama Tsongkhapa Guru Yoga and lam-rim and dedication prayers. In addition, the book contains teachings that contribute to a student's understanding of how to best engage in this practice. A precise commentary from Geshe Lama Konchog, an inspiring teaching from Lama Zopa Rinpoche based on a commentary written by Panchen Losang Chökyi Gyältsen, and a unique teaching from Lama Yeshe comprise the commentary section. The book's advice section includes guidelines for how to use the materials to complete the preliminary practice, either as a full-time retreat or as a daily practice.

E-book versions of the complete book and downloadable pdfs of the practice are available here.

Maitripa College has just been offered a precious and surprising blessing! Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche will offer a Long Life Empowerment tomorrow morning. This is also incredibly wonderful because today is also Yangsi Rinpoche's birthday!

From the students' side, it is very auspicious to make wishes for all of one's precious teachers to have long lives. Regarding one's own life, the practitioner aspires to not merely to have a long life, but to use one's life meaningfully, having conditions for purification and practice. Receiving long life empowerment is a powerful and beneficial blessing, generally preceded by a teaching.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend. There are no prerequisites, but it is good to refrain from eating eggs, meat, onion family, garlic, and radish tomorrow morning.
